English Language Arts & Reading

The English Language Arts and Reading Support Service provides professional development and expert assistance to PK-12 teachers in the ESC Region 12 area. This service supports ELA/R teachers in enhancing their skills and content knowledge in the areas of reading, writing, oral and written conventions, listening and speaking, and research.

Services Include:

  • Evidence-Based Professional Development
  • Expert Assistance
  • TEKS and STAAR Support
  • Instructional Coaching

All professional development opportunities for the '18-19 school year have been carefully aligned, and purposefully designed to create opportunities for teachers of literacy from all grade levels to network, have meaningful conversations, and develop refined strategies that will promote and cultivate a culture of literacy for students across Region 12. 

 

  • K-12: Balancing Literacy with the IFD - Join Christa Miller (K-5), Larissa Mezynski (6-12), and other educators to prepare for a year of purposeful integration of balanced literacy with the TEKS Resource Instructional Focus Document (IFD). 
    • Sept. 20th, 9am to 4pm (at Region 12)

     

  • K-12: Balancing Literacy with the IFD Planning Cohort - Join Christa Miller (K-5), Larissa Mezynski (6-12), and other educators, to collaborate in the implementation of practices from the September 20th Balancing Literacy with the IFD in the planning of upcoming units throughout the year.  
    • Nov. 1st, 3:30pm to 5:30pm (at Region 12, or via Zoom)
    • Dec. 11th, 3:30pm to 5:30pm (at Region 12, or via Zoom)
    • Feb. 12th, 3:30pm to 5:30pm (at Region 12, or via Zoom)
    • April 4th, 3:30pm to 5:30pm (at Region 12, or via Zoom)

 

  • K-2, 3-5, 6-12Writing Academy - Join Rachel Page (K-2), Christa Miller (3-5), and Larissa Mezynski (6-12), and other educators to have conversations discussing strategies, and collaborating on best practices
    • Oct. 18th, 9am to 4pm (at Region 12)
    • Jan. 31st, 9am to 4pm (at Region 12)
    • Feb. 28th, 9am to 4pm (at Region 12)

  • K-2, 3-5, 6-12: Literacy Stations in Action - Join Rachel Page (K-2), Christa Miller (3-5), and Larissa Mezynski (6-12) to reflect on current classroom practices, and develop new strategies that will equip you to implement highly effective literacy stations in your classroom. 
    • Nov. 8th, 9am to 4pm (at Region 12)
    • Feb. 20th, 3:30pm to 4:30 pm (virtual PLC via Zoom)

  • Gr. 9-10: Preparing Students for the English I & English II EOC Tests - Join Larissa Mezynski to refresh your knowledge of the assessment as you focus on developing a strategy for building your students' skills for the reading, writing, revising and editing sections of the EOC. 
    • Nov. 6th, 9am to 4pm (at Region 12)

Literacy Conference Banner

Register now for a day with Dr. Fisher and other experts addressing how to cultivate a culture of literacy in your classrooms and on your campus!

Dr. Douglas Fisher will speak during the morning keynote addressing how to "Make Literacy Visible" for your students, and in the afternoon, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in break-out sessions intentionally designed to provide educators with tools to cultivate a culture of literacy.
