Designing
with the End in Mind
As you continue to work on your Unit of Practice (UOP) remember to follow these
stages (as defined in the Understanding by Design Exchange Article entitled
Are the Best Curricular Designs "Backward") when you build a
unit:
- Identify
the Desired Results (What
should students know, understand, and be able to
do? What is worthy of understanding?
What enduring understandings are desired? Enduring understandings
are the big ideas, the important
understandings, that we want students to "get inside of" and
retain after they've forgotten many of the details.)
- Determine
Acceptable Evidence (How will you know
if students have achieved the desired results and met the standards?
What will you accept as evidence of student understanding and
proficiency?)
- Plan
Learning Experiences and Instruction (What enabling knowledge
(facts, concepts, and principles) and skills (procedures) will
students need to perform effectively?
What activities will equip students with the needed knowledge and
skills? What will need to be taught and coached, and how should
it best be taught, in light of performance goals?)
Beginning with Standards
As you re-visit your UOP, make sure you have included all of the
TEKS that you will be covering.
