Nurses

The School Nurse program at Education Service Center Region 12 seeks to provide school nurses with the most current information available. In the ever changing world of student health, it is vital that nurses receive up-to-date information. The School Nurse Program provides training sessions which will include hands-on experience and courses that refresh previously learned material.

Sessions provided and/or facilitated by the School Health Specialist at ESC Region 12 include:

  • Abstinence Education programs
  • American Heartsaver First Aid & CPR/AED for Schools
  • Coordinated School Health
  • Coordinated School Health Co-op membership
  • Annual Coordinated School Health Institute
  • Immunization Updates (if applicable)
  • Injury Prevention:
    • Administering Medication - School Healthcare Orientation
    • Asthma -Coordinated School Health Institute
    • Tobacco and alcohol awareness
  • Mental Health-Suicide Prevention
  • School Health Advisory Councils (SHAC)
  • School Nurse Updates
  • State Mandated TETN/Video Conferences for Nurses

Screenings:

  • Unlicensed Diabetic Care Assistant (SB 530) full training for new employee
  • Unlicensed Diabetic Care Assistant (SB 530) Annual refresher training for all UDCA employees who attended the full day training
  • Hearing Certification (certificate valid for 5 years)
  • Hearing Recertification (certificate valid for 5 years)
  • Scoliosis Certification (certificate valid for 5 years)
  • Vision Certification (certificate valid for 5 years)
  • Vision Recertification (certificate valid for 5 years)

Please be advised that if an individual does not attend a recertification vision or hearing training prior to December 31st of their 5th year of being certified they must attend the basic all day workshop/s. For example, if anniversary date for certificate is July 2005, the certificate expires December 31st of the expiration year (2005), not the 5 year anniversary of taking the class.

A nurse may earn Type I CNEs for attending designated sessions/workshops.

Counselors, social workers and psychologists may earn LPC/SW/CEU credit for attending designated sessions/workshops.

"McLennan Community College is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. This activity meets Type I criteria for mandatory continuing education requirements toward re licensure as established by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas."
