Gifted and talented education is often
considered "stuff to keep the smart kids busy."
However, through the Education Service Center Region
12's Gifted and Talented program, gifted and talented
education can become the springboard for activities
that will develop all students' gifts and talents.
According to state guidelines, gifted and talented
students must be served in three types of learning environments:
individual study, groups with students who have similar
gifts, and groups with all students. These learning
environments are not unique to gifted and talented students;
they apply to all students. For gifted students, though,
the curriculum level and work are more advanced.
TEA and the Center do encourage using gifted and talented
teaching strategies in regular classes and involving
gifted students in regular classes, so that all students
benefit and gifted students are not looked upon as different
or strange or better than everyone else.
ESC Region 12 provides educators quality staff development
that meets the state requirements in student identification
techniques, curriculum planning, program prototypes,
creative teaching strategies, and students' social and
emotional needs.
