ESC Region 12 Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Program provides services to school districts to develop and implement a program designed to prevent violence and substance abuse, promote school safety and create a disciplined environment conducive to learning.

Services include:

• Completion of the SAS application, amendments and evaluation and Regional Advisory Council
• Drug and violence perception survey for students by Choose To Care
• Anonymous Internet and phone tip line for students by Choose To Care
• Inclusion in regional prevention plan and technical assistance for developing district / campus prevention plans
• Attendance to SDFSC workshops conducted by ESC staff at ESC locations such as: character education, DAVE drug prevention curriculum, drug awareness, bullying and gang awareness
• Attendance to SDFSC workshops, including supportive curriculum materials, for scientifically research-based prevention programs addressed in the regional prevention plan such as: All Stars character education for middle school, Project ALERT substance use prevention for middle school, suicide prevention for high school
• One on-site awareness seminar for parents, on a topic such as: alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, grief and crisis reactions, suicide prevention bullying and gang violence
• Technical assistance for drug, violence and safety issues including bullying and gangs
• School-wide bullying and gang awareness and intervention planning (three monthly 1⁄2 day sessions with a school’s safety team)
• Guidance on compliance issues and requirements for NCLB
• Technical assistance with Performance-Based Monitoring related to Title IV
