ESC Region 12 is pleased to recognize extraordinary
educators from Central Texas. The 2006 Region 12 Secondary
Teacher of the Year is Gail Wood of Midway ISD.
Region 12 2006 Secondary Teacher
of the Year:

Gail Wood,
Midway ISD
Gail Wood has taught for more than 17
years, 15 of which have been for Midway ISD. From 1989
to 2002, Wood taught 7th grade Leadership Development,
where she was a Peer Assistance & Leadership (PALs)
teacher and sponsor. She currently teaches 9th grade
career studies and 11th and 12th grade PALs. The high
school teacher initiated the program for middle school
students in 1989, which was later expanded for high
school students. Wood holds a bachelor of science degree
from Baylor University.
Wood has received several awards prior
to the Region 12 honor. She recently was selected as
a Secondary Teacher of the Year for her campus and for
Midway ISD for 2005-2006. She was also honored to be
in Who’s Who Among American Teachers for 2004-2005.
Wood is also an active member of her community. She
creates, plans, and often facilitates events for PALs,
and volunteers her time to Keep Waco Beautiful and the
Relay for Life cancer walk.
Wood said two influences impacted her
decision to become a teacher – her childhood and
the enjoyment of working with people. She considers
it a mission to influence young people to become citizens
who will make our world better and enjoys watching them
experience the satisfaction and joy of accomplishment.
Wood says, “Even though the politics
of education can sometimes overshadow the teaching profession,
I realize the significance of what I do is a career
of honor and long-lasting consequence.”
