Region 12 2004 Secondary
Teacher of the Year:

Paula Robinson,
Waco ISD
Paula Robinson, the Region 12 Secondary
Teacher of the Year, has been an educator for 15 years,
the last five of those were at Waco High School. She
said her most significant accomplishment in education
has been renewing and revitalizing the previously ‘stagnated’
Advanced Placement Chemistry program at Waco High School.
The program has grown from two or three
students to 24 students who reflect the cultural and
economic diversity of the student population. Robinson
said test scores have improved drastically from three
years ago and the students in the program are more actively
involved in tutoring other students in chemistry as
well as performing five chemistry magic shows for younger
students. Robinson feels that her greatest contribution
to the teaching field is her system of allowing students
to have multiple opportunities for success in an extremely
difficult subject area.
Robinson obtained her bachelor’s
degree from the University of Houston and completed
postgraduate education studies in the secondary science
composite.
She has been a member of several district
and campus groups including the Campus Decision-Making
Committee and is certified as a mentor in the Texas
Beginning Educator Support System (TxBESS). Robinson
is a member of many professional associations, including
the National Science Teachers Association, American
Chemical Society, Science Teachers Association of Texas,
and Delta Kappa Gamma. Robinson was previously selected
as Waco ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year for
2003, a Golden Apple Teacher in 2003, and the Parents
for Public Schools Outstanding Teacher in 2001. She
is a team leader for the Waco Police Department’s
Victim Services program, and participates in several
community / charitable programs.
