ESC Region 12 is pleased to recognize extraordinary educators
from Central Texas. The 2004 Region 12 Elementary Teacher
of the Year (TOTY) is Barbara Johnson of Hamilton ISD.

Barbara Johnson, the Region 12 Elementary
Teacher of the Year, has taught at Hamilton ISD for
her entire 31-year career, the last three at the Ann
Whitney Elementary campus. Johnson said she is most
proud of the following accomplishments: her ability
to maintain high academic standards and produce successful
test scores in the classroom; instill in her students
a sense of discipline; and create a learning environment
conducive to higher-level learning.
Johnson’s professional roles include
participating in district and campus Site-Based Decision
Making activities, serving as the pep squad and cheerleader
sponsor for 25 years, and acting as a UIL coach.
Johnson holds a master’s and bachelor’s
degree from Tarleton State University. She is an active
member in her community -- chairing and participating
in various civic, church, state, and service groups.
She is a member and soloist of the First Baptist Church
of Hamilton, Texas, where she directs the Outdoor Easter
Pageant, an event that includes 80 cast members and
20 assistants.
The Hamilton ISD teacher has been a leader
and member of the Hamilton County Texas State Teachers
Association (TSTA) for ten years. Johnson was also selected
as the Elementary Teacher of the Year 2002-03 by Hamilton
ISD and the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce.
