Free Session for Parents to Discuss Cyber Bullying, Internet Safety and “Sexting” to be held Feb. 28
WACO, Texas – The number of students with access to the Internet has nearly doubled in the last decade, and parents need to be aware of the dangers presented by Internet and cell phone use. On Feb. 28, Education Service Center (ESC) Region 12 will host a free informational session for parents discussing Internet safety, cyber bullying and “sexting,” or sending sexually explicit messages or photographs by cell phone.
Rob Pruitt, Texas Education Agency bullying prevention initiative coordinator, will teach parents how to help their children be smart and cautious when interacting online. Pruitt will discuss the importance of parents setting guidelines for their student’s Internet and cellphone use and monitoring what they are posting. He hopes to educate parents on the information kids may post that can compromise their safety and identity.
Social media sites and text messages can also be a dangerous medium for bullying. Parents will also learn about the connection between bullying and the Internet, as harmful words can lead to physical violence, declining academic achievement and substance abuse.
The free session will be held at ESC Region 12, 2101 W. Loop 340 in Waco. A light meal will be provided, so pre-registration is required. Free child care is also available for infants and children under 12. Parents may register by calling Melva Harris at 254.297.1125 or Anna Elkins at 254.297.1253. If childcare is not needed, parents may register by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. For more information, contact Nancy Cross at 254.297.1207 or email@example.com.
