WACO, Texas – Education Service Center (ESC) Region 12 is pleased to announce that Copperas Cove ISD’s Board of Trustees has been named the Region 12 School Board of the Year (SBOTY). As a regional honoree, they will be a nominee for the Texas Honor School Boards, coordinated by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA).

“We’re very proud to have the Copperas Cove ISD Board of Trustees represent our region of school boards,” Executive Director Dr. Jerry Maze said. “This board is an example of the district’s outstanding dedication and commitment to a quality education for all students.”

The award is given annually to a school board that demonstrates effectiveness, follows board policy, supports educational performance standards and improvement, is committed to a code of ethics, provides financial support for the school system, participates in workshops and other performance improvement programs, prioritizes serving children above political motives, initiates public relations efforts and maintains harmonious and supportive relationships among board members.

Many factors contributed to the selection of the CCISD Board. Among them, was the fact that the board oversaw the district’s financing of 100 percent of the cost to build House Creek Elementary School by using the fund balance in November. This decision saved local taxpayers the cost of interest over the next 25 years by and avoided a bond election.

In January, the board unanimously approved new school attendance zones for the entire district, which allowed for the creation of neighborhood schools to better serve students. Also, the board has developed a 5-year strategic plan, for the district, in an effort to be proactive in meeting the needs of current and future student populations.

While the Texas legislature struggled to balance the state budget and proposed massive cuts to public education funding in April, the board used $3.5 million from the fund balance to offset the proposed budget cuts for the 2011-2012 school year, which prevented job loss and avoided a hiring freeze.

“I cannot say enough to express the support and dedication our board provides to me as a superintendent, and to the students, teachers and community of Copperas Cove. Their selection as the 2011 Region 12 Board of the Year is a truly well-deserved honor and key acknowledgement of the quality leadership they continue to provide for Copperas Cove ISD,” Superintendent Dr. Rose Cameron said.

Copperas Cove ISD is being recognized for the second time at the regional level, having been named as the SBOTY in 2004.

TASA's School Board Awards Committee will review the regional winners in August and select not more than five boards to be named and recognized as Honor Boards for the year. The Texas Outstanding School Board will be announced at the TASA/TASB Convention in September.

About TASA
TASA created the School Board Awards Program in 1971 to recognize those school boards that have demonstrated outstanding dedication and rendered ethical service to the children of Texas. The criteria emphasize evidence of support for educational performance improvement. The awards program allows each regional selection committee to submit up to two nominations for state competition, one from districts with less than 1,000 students and one from districts with more than 1,000 students.
