Thirty-four Area Schools Receive State Recognition
List of Region 12 honorees radically increases in a year

WACO, Texas – The numbers are in and Region 12 schools have raised the bar. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has announced its 2009-2010 Title I Distinguished School Performance and Distinguished School Progress honors. Thirty-four Region 12 schools are among this year’s recipients, increasing from 13 recognized last year.

Title I is the largest federally funded Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) program. Under ESEA, the law requires identification of Title I schools that are meeting or exceeding the state’s standards. Distinguished Performance schools are recognized as consistently providing educational excellence. Distinguished Progress schools are recognized for having made significant strides in reaching educational excellence.

“It is an outstanding achievement to maintain the high standards that are required to receive this honor for exceptional academic performance,” stated Barbara Agee, assistant director for accountability and federal programs at ESC Region 12. “With progress standards increasing at the federal and state level each year, these districts and campuses are to be commended for this accomplishment.”

To receive Distinguished School Performance honors, campuses must have met the following criteria: maintained an economically disadvantaged student population of 40 percent or higher, achieved both Adequate Yearly Progress and a State rating of Recognized or Exemplary for the past two years, and received an Exemplary rating in 2009. Distinguished School Progress honors are awarded to those campuses moving from an Unacceptable or Academically Acceptable state rating in 2007 to Recognized or higher in 2008, and Exemplary in 2009.

A complete listing of the Title I Distinguished Schools program in Texas can be viewed at http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/nclb/titleia/distingschools.html. For more information about Region 12 honorees and Title I programs, contact Barbara Agee at 254.297.1212.
