Second Annual School Business Conference Schedule for May 12-13
Past this Point, Hard Hats Required

Education Service Center (ESC) Region 12 is hosting its annual two-day School Business Conference to be held May 12-13 at 2101 W. Loop 340, Waco. The conference will include sessions presented by school business professionals who will address the hot issue of accountability with current state and federal laws.

The last legislative session resulted in an infusion of more money into schools provided by ARRA and stabilization funds, and with financial solvency on the way, more restrictions, documentation and transparency have been demanded in the school district world. We feel that hard hats may be necessary to keep increased regulations and other reporting details from falling in on us! Through this year's theme Past This Point, Hard Hats Required, we have designed the conference to help provide you with critical information that your district needs to protect you from “falling objects” in the form of IRS, TEA and other types of audits that may arise throughout the school year.

“Increased accountability requires school business personnel to stay informed of ever-changing state and federal laws," said Diane Roepke, business services manager for ESC Region 12 " The conference was created to provide current information in these areas for Texas school districts, and to give participants resources and assistance in understanding state and federal funding mandates.”

The conference will begin with inspirational speaker Dr. Joan Berry, University of Mary-Hardin Baylor. She taught in the Austin, Round Rock, and Temple school districts for 25 years before moving to the ESC Region 12, where she served as a reading specialist and director of curriculum. At UMHB, she teaches courses in child development, classroom management, diverse populations, and curriculum design.

Other presenters this year will include:

  • Rebecca Estrada, Lackland ISD - Compliance with Federal Regulations (FMLA/FLSA)
  • Monica Kohlenberg, Belt Harris & Associates, LLLP - New Fund Balance Reporting Requirements
  • Margie Horton, TRS - TRAQS
