WACO, TEXAS – International research shows that the majority of children who leave the early years unable to read, write or perform basic math find it difficult to progress in later years. To assist schools in the area of early childhood learning and stimulate parental involvement, Education Service Center (ESC) Region 12 is offering BLOCK Fest(TM). 

BLOCK Fest(TM) is an interactive building exhibit for children eight months to eight years of age and their parents. A preview of the event will be held 10:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5 at Brook Avenue Elementary - 720 Brook Avenue in Waco.

“This exhibit is designed to be a hands-on opportunity for children and parents to learn how different types of blocks support developing math, science, motor, language and problem solving skills,” said Melba Bunch, education specialist for ESC Region 12. “We encourage area children to become math and science thinkers at an early age, and we want parents and teachers to learn how easy it can be to help their children develop these important skills.”

ESC Region 12, in partnership with the Education Alliance, will showcase BLOCK Fest(TM) at the Greater Waco Community Education Summit on Nov. 19 at the Waco Convention Center.

The Center will offer BLOCK Fest(TM) workshops to teach area early childhood educators and professionals, students and child care providers about the new research, strategies and resources for block play. At the end of workshops, each participant is given materials to take back to their classroom or setting, along with information for parents about block play.
