ESC Region 12 Staff Earn National Distance
Learning Awards
Honorees are Two of Five National Winners
WACO, TEXAS—Education
Service Center Region 12 announced today that two
of its employees have won national awards in distance
learning activities. Roxanne Glaser and Shane
Howard received several National Distance Learning
Week Awards from the Center for Interactive Learning
and Collaboration (CILC). Glaser serves as the distance
learning coordinator and Howard serves as a level
5 technology specialist in Videoconference Services.
Together, they support nearly 60 districts in their
pursuit of educational opportunities through distance
learning.
Glaser and Howard are two of five k-12 education
employees from across the nation recognized for exemplary
use of videoconferencing (IVC) and/or other synchronous
communications technologies to support and advance
learning. Glaser earned the Professional Development
for Educators award for the Mystery Guest Showcase
event and a Collaborative Projects award for Monster
Match 2007. Howard earned the award for technical
program support for education.
“CILC is proud to recognize outstanding contributors to the
field of distance learning,” said Ruth Blankenbaker, executive director
of CILC. “These winners offer break-through applications of technology
that have great impact on student learning. They are models for us all.”
CILC announced all winners during its National Distance
Learning Week (NDLW) Awards Luncheon, which took
place November 13 as part of the CILC Symposium in
Indianapolis. The Symposium attracted distance learning
leaders from 26 states, Canada and the UK. AT&T
was the CILC Symposium title sponsor.
Glaser was also the recipient of the 2007 Center
Of Science and Industry (COSI) Excellence in Education
through Technology Award.
She is a strong advocate for distance learning in
the K-12 classroom and continues to create collaborative
events and connect schools to educational opportunities
to enhance learning. She has also worked as a classroom
teacher and curriculum specialist assisting new teachers
and their mentors. Glaser has been with ESC Region
12 for nine years, serving the last four in Videoconference
Services. She holds a master’s degree in educational
technology from Pepperdine University and bachelor’s
degree in English Literature from Baylor University.
Although Howard’s main focus is to provide
technical support for the center’s videoconferences
and school connections, he also presents unique content
to schools. His programs include “Singing with
Shane” and interactive learning activities
that inspire teachers and engage students. “Weather
with Rusty,” his latest project brings weather
safety into classrooms throughout central Texas.
This popular program will serve more than 2,000 students
this school year. Howard has been with the
center for six years.
NDLW is sponsored annually by the United States
Distance Learning Association. During NDLW, education
organizations nationwide organize events in recognition
of distance learning. The Awards Luncheon, sponsored
by TANDBERG, honored winners based on the results
of a vote by their peers.
