Local Students With Disabilities Ascending to the
Future
Unique Event to Attract 600 Parents & Students
with Special Needs
WACO, TEXAS – Education
Service Center (ESC) Region 12 in collaboration with
local organizations will host Help in Climbing the
Hill, a two-day event for parents and students with
disabilities. The event will focus on options and
services for students with special needs and will
take place Feb. 23-24 at Hill College in Hillsboro.
Notable speakers will include former Dallas Cowboy
Burton Lawless and Hillsboro ISD Superintendent Jerry
Maze.
Expecting about 600 participants, the event
will be divided into two days, the first specifically
targeted towards students and the second for parents
and professionals. Free child care is available on
Day Two with prior registration.
Day 1: Student Day
“In
order to increase the likelihood of a successful
transition from school to adulthood, we need to share
what resources and options are available.” said
Tina Herzberg, co-organizer of this year’s
transition fair and special education team leader
for ESC Region 12. “The students are the real
key! They have dreams and goals for the future, and
when we work together, the possibilities are endless.” The
student day will be held 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., Friday,
Feb. 23 at the Performing Arts Center and Instructional
Building at Hill College. Students will learn
about their options after high school. Break-out
sessions will focus on self-advocacy, community resources,
driving safety, employment, and college survival
skills. Lunch will be provided at no cost to students
due to a generous donation by H-E-B in Bellmead.
Day 2: Parent Day
Day two of the fair will take
place 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 24 at
the Performing Arts Center and Instructional Building
at Hill College. Child
care and lunch will be provided
for free with prior registrations. Sessions will
cover medical issues, behavior management, financial
planning, employment, accessing community services,
special education, assistive technology, therapies,
and family concerns. Exhibitors will be onsite with
information about available resources.
“Parents and professionals will have a unique
opportunity to obtain information regarding a broad
spectrum of topics with confidence that their children
are not only well cared for, they are having a blast,” Mary
Klentzman, Director of Children’s Special Needs
Network said.
Although free, pre-registration is required. Interested
individuals should register online for this event
at www.esc12.net. Each day of Help in Climbing the
Hill must be registered for separately. To register
