200-300 Math Teachers To Meet Feb. 24 in Waco
WACO, TEXAS--Education Service Center
(ESC) Region 12 will host the Seventh Annual Meeting
of the Central Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics
(CTCTM). The meeting will begin at 8:15 a.m. and
conclude at 12:15 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 24 at ESC
Region 12 in Waco.
Conference topics will include a look at best practices,
professional development available from ESC Region
12, and time to share what’s working in area
classrooms. The special meeting will feature nationally-recognized
mathematics educator Cathy Seeley as the keynote speaker.
The focus of Seeley’s keynote will be to promote
the notion of personal leadership, the idea that all
mathematics educators have to keep learning and reach
out beyond their own classrooms to promote excellence
in mathematics.
Seeley is a 34-year mathematics educator and change
facilitator at the local, state, and national levels.
Seeley recently served two years as president for the
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
Among her experiences in K-12 education, she has worked
as a mathematics teacher, district mathematics coordinator,
and state mathematics supervisor, in addition to serving
as advisor and consultant to school districts and state
agencies. From 1999-2001, Seeley served as a Peace
Corps volunteer to teach mathematics to children in
Burkina Faso, West Africa. Amongst an array of projects,
Seeley helped to produced the NCTM's Curriculum and
Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics in 1989.
Most recently, she served on a team to develop a distance
education online algebra project (ASK ME-Algebra).
She currently works at the Charles A. Dana Center at
the University of Texas in Austin.
Aimed at mathematics teachers of all levels in Central
Texas, the conference is sponsored by ESC Region 12
and the Department of Mathematics and Department of
