JUNE 4-5 CONFERENCE TO FOCUS ON NATIONAL ISSUES ADDRESSING STUDENT BEHAVIOR & DISCIPLINE
WACO, TEXAS – Why are some students resistant to doing school work? How can teachers change bad attitudes and defiant behavior in students? How can educators make curriculum relevant to today’s students? These are just a few of the issues that national presenters will focus on during the Eighth Annual Region 12 Behavior Conference on June 4-5 at Education Service Center (ESC) Region 12, in Waco.
“Despite the myriad of behavior challenges in general and special education students, there are positive, proactive and research-based practices that help all students succeed behaviorally—and that helps them succeed academically,” says Gwen Ryan, education specialist for ESC Region 12. “This conference will focus on helping teachers effectively deal with behavior issues by using positive discipline strategies and by creating well-managed learning environments.”
The two-day conference will feature well-known authors and nationally-known education consultants. Author and renowned presenter Lauretta Buchanan will reveal the methods necessary to teach children how to learn, not just what to learn on day one of the conference. Breakout sessions will address strategies for improving student behavior throughout the school environment as well as in individual instructional settings.
Other presentations will cover how to motivate students and how to develop functional behavior assessments and behavior interventions. Response to Intervention (RTI), a piece of federal legislation will be covered on day one as well. RTI requires schools to provide all students with an integrated teaching approach that encompasses scientifically research-based strategies that will assist schools in assessing the needs of struggling students and monitoring progress. One session will feature an interactive workshop that features a day in the life of a classroom teacher, where participants will learn strategies on effectively working with all personalities a teacher experiences in a classroom day. Day one of the conference will end with a session about environmental factors on the brain and the impacts on student behavior.
Dr. Bill DeMeo, a school psychologist for Cincinnati Schools’ Early Childhood Program will kick-off day two with a presentation about the current research in brain development as it relates to aggression. DeMeo’s session will discus proactive measures to work effectively with angry and aggressive students.
The two-day conference will cost $100 and is open to all educators. Parents are welcome to attend for free. Attendees will receive 12 hours of continuing education units. For more information, contact Education Specialist Gwen Ryan at 254/297-1159 or gryan@esc12.net.
