ESC REGION 12 TO OFFER SUBSTITUTE TEACHER TRAINING SESSIONS IN CENTRAL TEXAS
WACO, TEXAS - Skilled substitute teachers are in demand in Central Texas and school districts are finding it increasingly difficult to hire and retain significant numbers of qualified substitute teachers.
Following several successful substitute training workshops held last year that trained approximately 300 people, Education Service Center (ESC) Region 12 will again hold Substitute Teacher Training Certification workshops during the months of July and August throughout Central Texas.
According to studies performed by Utah State University, Pinellas County, Florida, reported that among 1,180 untrained substitutes, the district received 398 complaints that would require action from the district. Among the 851 trained substitutes, there were only 11 complaints (SubSolutions 2003).
During the one-day training, instruction will include teaching strategies, legal issues, first aid and classroom management. This training can also be used as a trainer-of-trainers for districts planning to do their own substitute training. Although the training does not guarantee a substitute position with any school district, it is a time-convenient and affordable way for participants in Central Texas to begin or improve their substitute teaching skills.
The substitute training workshop is open to anyone interested in becoming a substitute teacher, current substitute teachers, and substitute teachers returning to the field after an absence. However, all participants must have a high school degree to attend. The cost is $65 per person and participants will receive an ESC Region 12 Substitute Training certificate upon completion of the training.
For more information, training dates or to register, contact Kathy Gentry at 254/297-1244 or visit www.esc12.net/substitute.
