CAREER DAY TO ATTRACT MORE
THAN 1,700 ELEMENTARY STUDENTS APRIL 28
WACO, TEXAS -
Where can you find hundreds of curious elementary
students and nearly 50 career-related vehicles? At
C.O.W. (Careers On Wheels) Day, a fun, hands-on activity
to introduce young students to various careers involving
motor vehicles. The fourth annual career day will
take place 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April
28 at Education Service Center (ESC) Region 12 (Bagby
and Hwy 6).
Participating students will be prepped with
a classroom activity prior to the event to get their
wheels turning about vehicle-related careers and
what it takes to do those jobs. Once at the event,
vehicle drivers and operators will explain their
careers and how they operate and use their vehicles.
Students will have the opportunity to visit with
the career exhibitors and explore the vehicles. After
the event, students will be asked to write a letter
about their favorite career and why they chose it.
The state of Texas is transitioning to the USDE 16
Career Clusters. This movement in Texas will be identified
by the slogan "Achieve Texas", representing the core
message of "Lifelong Success for ALL Students". This
core message represents the prevailing theme of COW
Day.
"This is a unique learning experience that will
introduce Central Texas students to many different
vehicle-related careers. Since we are emphasizing
opportunities for all students, we find that
modeling and demonstrating careers sets excellent
and memorable examples for these young boys and girls.
We want them all to
know they can be anything they want to be!" said
Kathy Gentry, Career and Education Specialist for
ESC Region 12.
The static display of nearly 50 vehicles will include
a three-story crane, a bucket truck, a fire truck,
a mobile crime lab, a helicopter, an army hummer
and many other vehicles. Also attending will be the
Chick-Fil-A cow. The event is free and open to pre-registered
schools only.
In-kind event sponsors this year are
Coca Cola of Waco, Educators Credit Union, Shipleys,
