CONFERENCE TO FOCUS ON CONNECTION BETWEEN STUDENT BEHAVIOR AND ACHIEVEMENT
WACO, TEXAS – Linking classroom behaviors with students’ academic achievement is the main focus of this year’s Region 12 behavior conference. The Eighth Annual Region 12 Behavior Conference for general education and special education teachers will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 12 - 13 at ESC Region 12, in Waco.
“Students do better academically and behaviorally in a well structured learning environment,” said Gwen Ryan, ESC Region 12 education specialist. “When teachers spend less time dealing with students misbehaving, they have more time to teach, and kids have more time to learn.”
Various national speakers, well-known authors and
local administrators will offer two days of excellent
training where they will present strategies for managing
behavior along with maintaining suitable classroom
environments to maximize students’ educational
experience.
“If we are going to help students most at-risk for failure due to behavioral concerns, we must first understand the behaviors and then design strategies based on best practices,” said
educational consultant Dan St. Romain, M.Ed.
Conference sessions will include approaches to developing
responsible and motivated students, ways to manage
students with Attention-Deficit Hyperactive Disorder
(ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), insights
for teachers working with capable but defiant students,
how to support students in a crisis while keeping
control in the classroom, and disciplinary tactics
for those who misbehave. Breakout sessions will address
strategies for improving student behavior throughout
the school as well as individual instructional settings.
Sessions will be available for elementary, secondary,
general education and special education teachers
as well as counselors and paraprofessionals. The
event will cost $130 for all educators to attend.
Parents are welcome to attend for free. Attendees
will receive 12 hours of continuing education units.
