SUMMER
SUBSTITUTE TEACHER TRAINING TO BENEFIT STUDENTS NEXT
FALL
WACO, TEXAS-- Research from the Utah State University
shows that by the time a student graduates from high
school, he/she will have spent more than a full year
with a substitute teacher. This is just one of the
driving reasons quality substitutes are a must for
today’s classroom. The need for quality substitute
teachers is also due to the fact that teachers must
be out of the classroom for mandated staff development,
campus and district planning, and on occasion for
personal or family illness.
To help meet this continuing need, Education Service
Center Region 12 is offering two Substitute Teacher
Training sessions in Waco at ESC Region 12 on Friday,
July 22 and on Wednesday, July, 27 from 8:30 a.m.
– 4 p.m.
“Substitute teacher training is very important
because we do not want any gaps in the quality service
that our teachers provide. Our priorities for the
training are for the subs to provide consistent curriculum
and discipline in the classroom,” said Robin
Battershell, superintendent for Salado ISD.
As a registered provider of Continuing Professional
Education (CPEs) programs for administrators, educators,
paraprofessionals, and parents, ESC Region 12 is uniquely
qualified to facilitate this need and give potential
and current substitutes the training to be successful
in a classroom environment.
During the one-day training, instruction will include
first-aid and safety, conflict resolution, teaching
strategies, following lesson plans and classroom management
techniques. Participants will also learn how to confidently
instruct students and address student-related situations
they may face in the classroom. Although the training
does not guarantee a substitute position with any
school district, it is a time-convenient and affordable
way for participants in Central Texas to begin or
improve their substitute teaching skills.
The substitute training workshop is open to anyone
interested in becoming a substitute teacher, current
substitute teachers, and substitute teachers returning
to the field after an absence. All participants must
have a high school degree to participate in the training.
Maximum enrollment for each class is 25. The training
costs $65 per person and participants will receive
an ESC Region 12 Substitute Training certificate upon
completion of the training.
Individuals interested in becoming a substitute teacher
should be aware that while most area schools will
hire individuals who have a high school diploma, some
will require substitute training and/or a minimum
of 60 college hours to be a substitute teacher. The
Region 12 training serves as a trainer-of-trainer
model for districts who may want to implement their
own substitute training. Gentry is also available
to provide onsite training to districts who have a
pool of substitute, but may not have staff available
to come to the training at a Region 12 office.
