ESC REGION 12 TO OFFER SUBSTITUTE
TEACHER TRAINING SESSIONS IN CENTRAL TEXAS
WACO, TEXAS — Research from Utah State University
(USU) shows that by the time a student graduates from
high school, they will have spent more than a full
year with a substitute teacher. It is for this reason
and many others that schools must employ quality substitute
teachers. To help districts with these efforts, Education
Service Center (ESC) Region 12 is holding trainings
to prepare substitute teachers for today’s classroom
(see schedule on pg. 2). This same research shows
that quality substitute teachers are needed because:
• 90 percent of school districts have difficulties
finding quality substitute teachers
• 84 percent of districts nationwide spend less
than four hours training subs
• More than $2 billion is spent annually on
substitute teacher pay
• 77 percent of teachers miss school to attend
professional development classes
The one-day training includes classroom management
strategies, teaching strategies, implementing lesson
plans, conflict resolution and instruction on first-aid
safety. All of these strategies will prepare the substitute
teacher to confidently and successfully address daily
classroom activities and situations.
ESC Region 12 is currently the only known program
to offer substitute teacher trainings in Central Texas.
The center has trained more than 700 substitutes since
the program came into existence in 2003 and there
are five school districts in Region 12 that require
their substitutes to attend this training. The substitute
teacher training is open to current substitute teachers,
substitute teachers returning to the field after an
absence, or anyone interested in becoming a substitute
teacher. Individuals interested in becoming a substitute
teacher should be aware that while most area schools
will hire individuals who have a high school diploma,
some will require substitute training and/or a minimum
of 60 college hours to be a substitute teacher.
The training costs $65 and participants will receive
an ESC Region 12 Substitute Training certificate upon
completion of the training. Although the training
does not guarantee a substitute position with any
school district, it is a time-convenient and affordable
way for participants in Central Texas to begin or
improve their substitute teaching skills. The Region
12 training also serves as a trainer-of-trainer model
for districts who may want to implement their own
substitute training.
