CAREERS ON WHEELS DAY DROVE IN
1,700
ELEMENTARY STUDENTS ON APRIL 22
WACO, TEXAS— Where can you find hundreds
of curious elementary students and nearly 50 career-related
vehicles? At C.O.W. (Careers On Wheels) Day, a fun,
hands-on activity to introduce young students to
various careers involving motor vehicles. The third
annual career day took place on Friday, April 22
at Education Service Center (ESC) Region 12 (Bagby
and Hwy 6).
Participating students were prepped with a classroom
activity prior to the event to get their wheels
turning
about vehicle-related careers and what it takes to
do those jobs. Once at the event, vehicle drivers
and operators explained their careers and how
they operate and use their vehicles. Students had
the opportunity to visit with the career exhibitors
and explore the vehicles. After the event, students
were asked to write a letter about their favorite
career and why they chose it.
“This is a unique learning experience that
will introduce students to many different vehicle-related
careers. Since we are emphasizing opportunities for
all students, we find that modeling and demonstrating
careers sets excellent and memorable examples for
these young boys and girls. We want them all to know
they can be anything they want to be!” said
Kathy Gentry, career and education specialist for
ESC Region 12.
The static display of nearly 50 vehicles included
a three-story crane, a bucket truck, a fire truck,
a mobile crime lab, a helicopter, an army tank and
many other vehicles. Adding to the fun and excitement,
the event featured the Oscar Mayer wienermobile.
More than 3,000 students attended the second annual
event last year; however, event coordinators are
limited enrollment to 2,000 students this year to
provide a more spacious environment.
In-kind event sponsors this year were Coca Cola
of Waco, Educators Credit Union, Krispy Kreme, H-E-B,
ESC Region 12, Dr Pepper, and Port-o-Jons. See
