THORNBURG CENTER CONFERENCE
COMES TO REGION 12 ON MARCH 11

Ezedia and ESC Region 12 invite administrators and educators to attend an informative day-long conference on Thursday, March 11 featuring Dr. David Thornburg and Dr. Lynell Burmark. Attendees will hear from education’s pragmatic visionaries on new ways to effectively utilize technology to enhance learning and increase student achievement.

Dr. David Thornburg's Topics

From Data to Understanding: Navigating Informational Spaces in the Age of Overwhelm
This presentation addresses pragmatic concerns of all educators working in this age of data overwhelm. Award-winning educator and futurist Dr. Thornburg shares practical strategies to help move from the world of highly impersonal data to the domain of personal understanding – a journey we all want students to take as they study any subject at virtually any grade.

Inquiry: Technology and the Art of Helping Students As Good Questions
Participants in this workshop explore the inquiry process through a combination of presentations and hands on activities. We show (and use) modern technologies in support of finding good questions whose answers will help students gain mastery of any subject being taught. As with other workshops in this series, this one focuses on moving students from the world of information to the domain of understanding.

Dr. Lynell Burmark's Topics

Visual Literacy: Learn to See, See to Learn
Recognize that the primary literacy of the 21st century is visual; pictures, graphics, images of every kind. For teachers to reach today’s students, and for these students to share their own mastery of content in compelling ways, we need the kind of “visual literacy” you discover in this practical session. Come see how incorporating visuals can accelerate learning and improve test scores. Experience the move from boring bullets to compelling full-screen photos, from slides of dry text to sequences of emotion-packed images. Discern the subliminal effects of colors, and consider the appropriate use of fonts and charts to make your presentations and communications more powerful. NOTE: In-depth handouts plus a DVD of Dr. Burmark’s video “Why Visual Literacy?” will be provided for each participant.

Learn to Read or Go to Jail: The Imperative for Early Literacy
“State bases need for new prison cells on fourth-grade reading scores!” Society blames schools for these headlines and mandates that all children must learn to read. But traditional techniques and programs just can’t do the job. In this practical session, we look at the critical role of technology and emphasize the importance of multiple intelligences and a differentiated approach. We share the resources and the inspiring story of one school’s Reading Warranty Program that guarantees incoming kindergartners will be reading at or above grade level by the end of second grade.

Enhancing Learning with Multimedia
Today’s students take in and respond to rapidly transmitted sights and sounds whether on television, computers, or video games. They are hyper-communicators, multi-taskers, and goal oriented – they are wired differently. Digital students want to learn using technology because that is what they are familiar with. However, if we only use technology to improve basic skills, we are not taking advantage of the power of technology to impact student achievement. In this presentation learn about digital learning solutions that engage students, foster digital literacy, and improve academic achievement by using multimedia technology in the classroom.

ESC Region 12 encourages you to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. Regrettably the date for this event coincides with Spring Break for many of our districts, however we didn't want to miss this once in a lifetime chance to bring a renowned speaker such as Dr. Thornburg to Region 12.
