ESC REGION 12 AND BAYLOR UNIVERSITY AWARDED
NEARLY $1 MILLION AMERICAN HISTORY GRANT

WACO, TEXAS-- U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige said that American History is one of the crucial subjects our students need to master and announced that $98.5 million in Teaching American History grants will be awarded to numerous school districts in 34 states and several education service centers in Texas, with Education Service Center (ESC) Region 12 and Baylor University receiving nearly $1 million of those total funds.

The Teaching American History Grant supports a three-year project in professional development geared towards improving teacher performance and creating opportunities “for teachers to hone their skills in American history,” said Joan Berry, Director of Core Curriculum at ESC Region 12.

American history and social studies teachers from seven Central Texas independent school districts including China Spring, Connally, Cranfills Gap, Crawford, Kopperl, Waco and Westphalia, will benefit from summer institutes on the Baylor University campus, a distinguished lecture series, museum tours, and professional development and mentoring programs through ESC Region 12.

“We are absolutely thrilled and can’t think of anything more important than improving the understanding of our culture and national heritage,” said Berry adding, “This grant will improve teachers’ expertise in American History and benefit their students.”

One of 20 centers throughout Texas, ESC Region 12 assists 78 independent school districts and 11 charter schools in attaining the Texas Education Agency’s goals and objectives. Based in Waco, with offices in Copperas Cove, Corsicana, Goldthwaite, and Hillsboro, the ESC Region 12’s service area includes Bell, Bosque, Coryell, Falls, Freestone, Hamilton, Hill, Lampasas, Limestone, Mills, McLennan, and Navarro counties.
