3rd Annual School Bus Safety Speech Contest
Theme: “Are School Buses the Safest Form of Transportation,
and if so, Why?”
Sponsored by the Texas Department of Public
Safety and the Texas Association for Pupil Transportation,
this contest is open to all 11th and 12th grade students in
Texas. Each district may select one participant from each
grade level to participate in the regional contest to be held
at the Regional Education Service Center. The district must
register their participants with the Texas Department of Public
Safety by January 16, 2004.
The contest at the Region 12 Education Service
Center will be held on February 3, 2004. The contest will
begin at 9 a.m. with participants checking in by 8:45 a.m.
One 11th grade and one 12th grade winner will continue to
the state competition.
All Regional contests must be completed by
February 13, 2004 with regional winners registered for the
state competition to be held at the Texas Department of Public
Safety offices in Austin on April 2, 2004. There will be a
1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner from each grade level. The overall
winner will present the speech before the Texas Association
for Pupil Transportation at the June conference in Galveston.
The winner will also be entered in the next level of competition
which is a multi-state regional contest. The winner of that
contest will advance to the national level. The Texas winner
for 2002 from Lubbock, Corrie Bridges won the National Competition
and an additional $2000 award. The Texas winner for 2003 from
Royce City ISD, Christa Bieker won 2nd place at the National
Competition and an additional $1000 award.
Flyers and letters regarding this contest
were mailed to each school district in Texas. The flier
includes complete rules and instructions as well as the scoring

State Champions: $1000 Scholarship Check
State 2nd Place: $500 Savings Bond
State 3rd Place: $250 Savings Bond
Region Champs: $100 Savings Bond
